K&K Sound Artist of the Month

Dave CookDave Cook

Dave uses the Trinity Western in his Larrivee D-05 Acoustic Guitar.

I'm a self-taught guitarist, with a Master of Arts in Worship from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. My work with music is threefold: writing hymns for the church to sing, leading
worship at my local church (Eagle Heights Baptist Church of Shepherdsville, KY), and teaching others to play guitar and lead in congregational singing.

I began writing hymns immediately after graduating seminary in 2007. My aim is to write lyrics with sound theology and good imagery, and set them to music that works across many cultural landscapes. American culture is somewhere between a melting pot and a tossed salad, and I'm attempting to write hymns that are set on basic chords and can be easily adapted to other
styles for churches in other cultures and sub-cultures. I also write new music for older historic hymns for which the melodies have been forgotten (a lot of the great hymn writers only wrote down texts, for some reason.) I'd say the style that often comes out is somewhere between blues and folk.

The end goal of all this is to bring the truth to the lips of congregations that love to sing it. As a church song leader, I know how hard it can be to find songs that are both true and musically good.
